Still you will at a very minimum lose 50% of you bandwidth and you will more than double any issue related to packet delays.
For these to work well they need to be placed in a location that gets good signal from the main router but can still transmit far enough to the end users. Your last option would be to use repeaters. To many variable to predict all depends on the house and where stuff is located.
It still may not be strong enough to get good signal on the floor above. As long as you put it on a different radio channel this will be your best option. If you can extend a wire from the router to say the second floor you could use a AP to extend the signal. Wireless signal is primarily designed to travel horizontally not vertically. Your issue with wireless are going to be much worse than other people trying to extend the range. If that is not possible then try powerline networks. I would run ethernet all the way if you can. When it get bad enough the game can not compensate for it. Games use very little bandwidth but need a very consistent stream of data but in wireless interference will cause packets to be delayed by random amounts. You could be sitting right next to the router and have super strong signal and get random lag spikes and drops in games. dont quote me on that, it could be quite wrong, but also the only motherboards I see that express high-end wireless for gaming are the most expensive ones that have their own recievers. Iirc the problem with wireless is that the data packages are compressed then sent to your computer.
